Born and bought up in Jaipur, I have visited Jantar Mantar multiple times. I always wondered how the idea of this largest sundial in the ancient history was processed. Not talking about science but about the philosophy behind it. Today in this monsoon season, when I and my camera were busy capturing some candid photos I clicked this picture where a pigeon was flying above the Samrat Yantra and I wonder “Are the humans as free as this pigeon?” (Drop your thoughts in the comment section).
Talking about Jantar Manta in Jaipur, it was constructed by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II. There are 5 such observatories in different parts of the country: Jaipur, Mathura, Delhi, Ujjain, and Varanasi. The largest one is in Jaipur. The Vrihat Samrat yantra is a part of Jantar Mantar. It is a sundial that can give the local time to an accuracy of 2 seconds. This Big Sundial is 27 meters tall and is so large that its shadow moves at a speed of 1 millimetre per second. If you stand and watch it, you'll see it move 6 cm per minute. The UNESCO World Heritage site has mentioned this itinerary as a must visited place in India.
