Ever wonder what a fair without a lot of tourists and photographers will look like?
Attend the Mallinath Cattle Fair, Tilwara. It is the biggest cattle fair in Rajasthan held every year near the shrine of a local hero, Rawal Mallinath. This year the fair was inaugurated on 18th March 2023 (Saturday) late evening on the banks of Luni River by Barmer district collector Lok Bandhu and SP Digant Anand. More than 1100 horses of different breeds and 1000+ Camels were put up for sale in more than 200 stalls. Cattle rearers and businessmen from across the country have shown interest in purchasing cattle.
Every year this cattle fair starts with a maha yagya and flag hosting at a temple nearby. It is accompanied by songs that describes the greatness of Rawal Mallinath. It is said that he was a warrior saint and known to be a horse lover. According to the history of this fair, it is believed that this fair was started when the transactions between the admirers of Rawal Mallinath, gathered in Tilwara, riding on well-bred animals to meet him.
This year the fair was bigger than the last few years. With more than 1000+ camels and 1000+ horses, people from Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Gujarat, and Madhya Pradesh took part in this fair.
However, this fair is seeing some severe effects from the growing textile industry in the regions of Balotra and Jasol. Since this fair is organized near the Luni River now due to these increasing textile industries the river water has been affected. the textile industries discharge the waste directly into the river without treating it. With no other option, the cattle have to drink water from the polluted river. Many animals become sick due to which cattle rearers have now lost interest in this fair, which is affecting the amount of footfall.
