Kanwar Yatra is a Hindu pilgrimage that is undertaken in the month of Shravan (July-August) to collect holy water from the Ganges River (Or nearby Source of Holy Water) and offer it to the god Shiva. The word "kanwar" refers to the bamboo pole that is used to carry the water, and the pilgrims are known as "Kawad Yatri" or "Kanwariyas".

There are many stories about the origin of Kanwar Yatra, but the most popular one is associated with the churning of the ocean of milk in Hindu mythology. When the gods and demons churned the ocean, they released a number of different things, including the nectar of immortality (amrita). However, they also released a number of other things, including the poison Halahala. The poison was so powerful that it threatened to destroy the world.

Lord Shiva, who is known for his ability to consume poison, volunteered to drink the poison to save the world. He drank the poison, but it turned his throat blue. To help Shiva recover from the poison, the gods brought him holy water from the Ganges River.

Since then, Kanwar Yatra has been a way for Hindus to show their devotion to Shiva and to thank him for saving the world from the poison. The pilgrimage is also a way for Hindus to cleanse themselves of sin and to seek blessings from Shiva.

Kanwar Yatra is a major pilgrimage in India, and it is estimated that millions of people participate in it each year.

The pilgrims who undertake Kanwar Yatra typically walk for several days to reach the Ganges River. They carry the water in a kanwar, which is a bamboo pole with two pitchers attached to it. The pilgrims often sing hymns and chant mantras as they walk, and they may also stop at temples along the way to pray.

When the pilgrims reach the Ganges River, they bathe in the water and then collect some of the water to take back home. They then offer the water to Shiva in their local temples.

Kanwar Yatra is a physically and spiritually demanding pilgrimage, but it is also a very rewarding experience for the pilgrims. The pilgrimage is a way for them to connect with their faith and to seek blessings from Shiva. It is also a way for them to experience the beauty of the natural world and to meet other people who share their faith.
