Hariyali Teej: A Celebration of Love, Fertility, and the Arrival of the Monsoons.
Hariyali Teej is a popular Hindu festival celebrated in the Indian state of Rajasthan, as well as other parts of India and Nepal. It is a festival of love, fertility, and the arrival of the monsoons. The festival is celebrated on the third day of the first fortnight of the Shravan month, which is usually in the months of July or August.
In Jaipur, Hariyali Teej is a major festival and is celebrated with great enthusiasm. The celebrations begin on the first day of the festival, which is called "Dar Khane Di". On this day, married women visit their parents' home and enjoy a meal prepared by their parents. The second day is the main day of the festival, and is a day of fasting for married women. On this day, women wake up early in the morning, bathe, and apply henna to their hands and feet. They then dress in their best clothes, which are usually red, green, or orange, and go to the temple to pray to the goddess Parvati. After the prayers, the women gather together and sing and dance. They also play on swings, which are a symbol of fertility.
In the evening, the women break their fast and enjoy a feast. The feast usually includes traditional Rajasthani dishes such as ghevar, a sweet made of milk, flour, and sugar, and bhang ki lassi, a drink made of milk, yogurt, and cannabis.
The third day of the festival is called "Bhain Duj". On this day, sisters visit their brothers' home and are given gifts. The brothers pray for the long life and happiness of their sisters.
